Is college necessary to succeed in music business?

Did I just waste four years of my life in college?

Education beyond high school isn’t for everybody.  That is certain.
A majority of the people in music business today have no college education and if they do, it’s unlikely they graduated with  “Music Business” as a major.  Years ago when the top dogs of the music industry were in college, majors like that didn’t even exist.
I’m currently in my fourth year of college with a Music Business major and a double minor in Public Relations and Live & Performing Arts Management.  Am I guaranteed to land my dream job straight after graduation? Absolutely not. But has the four years of tuition money been worth it?
I barely got out of high school. I didn’t have a miserable high school experience but I definitely wasn’t a good student.  But in college I’ve excelled.  Near-perfect GPA and a stack of Dean’s List letters to prove it. I didn’t magically become a good student overnight, I just actually care about the material I’m learning now.  I look forward to coming to class and I get excited about the topics we cover. Marketing plans? Hell yeah, I can write them in my sleep. Publishing contracts? Instant boner.  How free will basically doesn’t exist and the details of how biases and heuristics affect our decisions and something as silly as anchoring can change how we negotiate a record deal? Sign mE TF UP.  I live for this stuff.
I’m getting excited and going off on a tangent here.
Basically what I’m trying to say is that college was the right path for me.  Yeah, I probably could have gotten in the music industry and worked my way up, learning from personal experiences, but the formal education has 100% helped me along the way. I don’t regret a second of it.  I have changed and grown so much over the years from both real world experiences and college.  My school has given me so many amazing opportunities and introduced me to some of the coolest people in the music biz and I will forever be grateful.
It's not for everyone but it was the right choice for me.  I can’t even put a price on the personal growth and education I’ve gained over the past four years and because of that I have more confidence than ever to take on my goals.  Being a figure in the entertainment industry went from being just a dream, to being something visibly attainable.
